2021.12.06 18:01 ComplexIma Transition Applied to Pure Mathematics PhD (Should I Hold On?)

Hi all,
Apologies if you get a lot of posts like this. Not sure where else to ask.
Basically, I started my PhD in applied mathematics about two months ago and on one hand I enjoy it, but on the other it's a lot more science and a lot less math than I was hoping for. I find myself longing to do more pure math again (like functional analysis, theory of PDEs, real analysis, ect). I
I'm not really used to the scientific thinking and I'm finding it very hard to find a scientific question that'll have actual real life impact (and which is also mathematically interesting to me). I chose to do a PhD in applied mathematics because I want what I do to have impact in a field that's important to me (biology of ageing/rengenerative medicine). However if I'm not actually able to contribute anything worthwhile ... I might as well do the maths I like more. Basically my questions are: Is it even an option to find a new PhD at this stage? Should I hold on for longer to see if I can find a question that meets my criteria?
Factors:
I have a quite a good academic background in the pure areas I'm interested in
I have no research experience in the pure areas
I have no references who work in the pure areas My supervisor is actually very nice and it would be awkward leaving his group. I might not get lucky again.

2021.12.06 18:01 Mindless-Sir950 What jobs can I land after spending the year as an executive assistant?

I have a PR background and left the agency world for a company that had (or at least tried) to establish work life balance. While I did achieve that I’m growing bored of being an EA. I’ve been told that this is a stepping stone to a department that interests me, but we move so quickly no one has time to teach me or let me sit in on small meetings.
I wouldn’t mind going back to PR but since I haven’t been using my writing skills I fear it will be back to a jr level position making less than what I do now.
I’m looking to stay in my current pay range (65k and up) any advice?

2021.12.06 18:01 Al_Shakir Which forms of Judaism were incorrect and when?

Both supersessionist and dual-covenant supporters could answer this in different ways, but I'd be interested in hearing from both.
Was the form of Judaism affirmed by the author of 2 Maccabees a correct religion at the time it was written? Do you think that was a form of Pharisaic Judaism or not? Was there any implementation of Pharisaic Judaism which was a correct religion in its time? Were there other forms of Judaism (e.g., the form of Judaism affirmed by the author of 1 Maccabees, etc.) which were correct religions in the second and first centuries BC? Which forms of Judaism were incorrect in the second and first centuries BC?
By "correct" here I mean any of divinely commanded/divinely tolerated or morally righteous/morally acceptable.

2021.12.06 18:01 goth_broth Incorrect subtitles?

I'm rewatching Hannibal right now on Hulu, and in s1e2 Amuse-Bouche there are subtitles with dialogue when no one is speaking on screen. For example, at timestamp 10:40, the subtitles read, "Jason, where are you taking us? I think we're lost." but none of the boys are speaking, nor are their mouths moving. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know why this could be happening? I don't even know if this is the right sub to post this in lol

2021.12.06 18:01 pennyraingoose Sub where users discussed and maybe even started implementing internet services available to the public (or how to do it for yourself in case your only local provider goes down).

I might have unsubscribed because I wasn't ready for the level of tech involvement, but might be soon. I'd love to find that group (or something similar, if it exists).

2021.12.06 18:01 Whibble-Bop Quick Question

My wife has just gotten into this game and we're running Hell Cows together. I am considering making an absurdly ridiculous Find Item barbarian to follow her around and hork all her kills while kitted out with like 1000 mf
Two questions
A) Any reason why this wouldn't work?
B) The Find Item skill goes off of the Barbarian's MF, not the person who killed the monster, right?

Just thinking of fun ways to play while letting her have the glory of slaughtering cows.

2021.12.06 18:01 kaia_1527 Is there an open-source way to replicate entity-level sentiment from Google's Cloud Natural Language API?

I'm learning about NLP and was really impressed with Google's Natural Language API (demo). It seems that entity-level sentiment analysis is the future of NLP. Has anyone in the community come across open-source libraries that replicate the API (although of course with lower F1 scores). I found an excellent repo called ABSA-PyTorch but it seems that all the implementations are classification-based; that is, they return "positive/negative" rather than a spectrum between positive and negative. Is there a sub field of Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) that isn't classification based? I wasn't able to find any keywords despite hours of Google searching.
